How to set a savings goal you'll actually hit

Whether it's an emergency fund, a trip home, a wedding, or a down payment, every savings goal comes down to three numbers: the amount, the deadline, and the per-paycheque contribution that connects them. Pick any two and this calculator gives you the third.

  • Got a deadline? Use "How much to save?" to get the exact weekly, biweekly, or monthly amount.
  • Got a fixed budget? Use "How long will it take?" to see your finish date at the rate you can afford.
  • Earning interest? Add your rate and watch the required contribution drop — compound growth does some of the work.

Savings goal FAQs

How do I calculate how much to save each month?

Take your goal amount, subtract what you’ve already saved, and divide by the number of months until your deadline. For example, saving $6,000 in 12 months with $1,000 already saved means ($6,000 − $1,000) ÷ 12 ≈ $417/month. This calculator does the math instantly, including interest if your savings earn any.

Does this savings calculator work without interest?

Yes — just leave the interest rate blank. Many people keep goal savings in a regular account, so the calculator defaults to no interest and only compounds if you enter a rate.

Is it better to save weekly, biweekly, or monthly?

Whatever matches your payday. If you’re paid biweekly, saving biweekly means the transfer happens right when money arrives — before you can spend it. The total is what matters; the frequency just makes it automatic.

Should I account for inflation in my savings goal?

For goals under about two years, inflation barely matters. For longer goals, add roughly 2–3% per year to your target amount, or enter your interest rate minus expected inflation as a "real" rate to be conservative.

How do I actually stick to a savings goal?

Automate the transfer on payday, and track your spending so the money is actually there to transfer. A budgeting app like Spend Split shows where every dollar goes and alerts you before you overspend the categories that eat your savings.
